Turks & Caicos Islands

Aims of the project: to improve the quality of patient care and introduce modern management processes and medical technologies.

A team led by current GHD consultants stepped in to manage a 25+5 year Design, Build, Operate Transfer (BDOT) contract for two hospitals in the Turks & Caicos Islands, originally set up through a Public-Private Integrated Partnership.

The PPP program was, at the time, close to failure as a result of escalating costs and worsening relations with the government. The team successfully stabilised spend and oversaw the program through to achieving Diamond Standard Accreditation – largely eliminating the dependency on an overseas treatment program, reducing overall costs by a further $12m annually.

Today, the islands enjoy state-of-the-art healthcare facilities and an island program that has become a regional success story.

The British Hospital - Manama, Bahrain

Aims of the project: In what is set to be a landmark development for the region’s healthcare services, GHD has signed a contract to deliver a 31-storey specialist hospital in the Bahraini capital of Manama. The project sees us managing the financing, design and construction of the hospital, as well as overseeing its equipping and resourcing in line with a comprehensive management and service delivery model.

Alongside completion of the building structure, the GHD project team is currently progressing discussions with a range of British and international service providers to explore opportunities for them to offer their leading-edge, specialist expertise within the hospital’s expansive capacities. Demand in Bahrain across a number of areas – including rheumatology, orthopaedics, endocrinology gastroenterology, plastics, dermatology, paediatrics, ophthalmology and dentistry – remains unsatisfied, and in finalising its case mix, model of care and internal hospital design, GHD is assessing the opportunities which exist for the provision of much-needed specialist care in these disciplines.

This will contribute to the project’s overall aim of attaining “Centre of Excellence” status – that is, an epicentre of the highest quality specialist provision for a large patient population, a leading example of best practice and a source of training for healthcare institutions across the region. Plans are also underway to incorporate green and carbon-neutral principles into the hospital’s construction and operations, aligning with Bahrain’s commitment to COP26 and the ambitious interim goals set.

Hospital Development - Multiple Locations, Sudan

Aims of the project: GHD is currently engaged in the development of two hospitals in large cities, on behalf of a key public authority in Sudan, North Africa. The project team is partnering with the authority in a number of different capacities dependent on the phase of the project, including a consultancy phase – in which GHD will review facilities and devise recommended commercial models for their development and operation – and a partnership phase, in which GHD will deliver services through a PPP-type arrangement. During the initial consultancy phase, GHD will work in conjunction with its local partner, Sudanese British Medical Services Limited, and advise on project structure and timelines, appointing and managing contractors and defining the clinical delivery model. During the partnership phase, GHD’s input may extendto commissioning and operating the facilities under a 25 or 30-year arrangement, and upskilling its local partner and delivering broader benefits to the local health economy.

Further afield, GHD is also actively exploring a partnership with a well-recognised and established diagnostics company working across Africa to introduce internationally accredited diagnostic facilities.

Sussex MSK Partnership East

Aims of the project: o eliminate the inconsistencies of process and outcomes, reduce spending to the national average spend per capita and deliver a Musculoskeletal (MSK) service that demonstrated best practice against national benchmarks.

Current GHD consultants led a multi-disciplinary team of subject-matter experts through the design and development phase, business case development and advising on the program evaluation process. The team held market engagement events and led the NHS purchaser through the full procurement and negotiation phase of a complex Multi-provider Prime Provider arrangement, in what was one of the UK’s first Accountable Care contracts.

After seven years, the project continues to enjoy much success and has achieved £14m of efficiency savings and improving the delivery of MSK services across the Sussex Health economy. The commercial innovation developed during this program has also influenced developments in the UK’s NHS standard contract and the purchasing of specialist services.

NHS Community Health Services

Aims of the project: Supporting the Local Health Authority to design and implement a Care in the Community scheme that would improve access to quality healthcare closer to home.

Working closely with the local health economy, a team led by current GHD consultants delivered this community service project designed to support people with multiple, complex health needs who depend on many health and social care, recognizing that the increasing numbers of people living with long-term conditions would likely result in more people needing support from community health services in the future.
